On January 8th, the National Standards Committee website announced the approval and release of 243 national standards, including GB/T 17350-2024 “Classification, Naming and Model Compilation Method for Special Purpose Vehicles and Semi-Trailers”. This new standard will officially come into effect on January 1st, 2026.
Replacing the long-standing GB/T 17350—2009 “Classification, Naming and Model Compilation Method for Special Purpose Vehicles and Semi-Trailers”, the year 2025 will serve as a special transition period. During this time, special purpose vehicle enterprises can choose to operate according to the old standard or adopt the new standard in advance, gradually and orderly transitioning to full implementation.
The new standard clearly defines the concept, terminology, and structural characteristics of special purpose vehicles. It adjusts the classification of special purpose vehicles, establishes structural characteristic codes and usage characteristic codes for special purpose vehicles and semi-trailers, and outlines a model compilation method. This standard applies to the design, manufacturing, and technical characteristics of special purpose vehicles and semi-trailers intended for road use.
The new standard defines a special purpose vehicle as a vehicle designed, manufactured, and technically characterized for transporting specific personnel, transporting special goods, or equipped with specialized devices for engineering special operations or specific purposes. The standard also provides detailed definitions of cargo compartment structures, which are vehicle structural components designed, manufactured, and technically characterized for loading goods or installing specialized devices. This includes box-type structures, tank-type structures, lifting dump truck structures, lifting and hoisting structures, and special structures among other types of special purpose vehicle structures.
The classification of special purpose vehicles has been adjusted, dividing them into the following categories: special passenger vehicles, special buses, special trucks, special operation vehicles, and special purpose vehicles.
Within the special truck category, the standard includes: refrigerated trucks, barrel-type garbage trucks, compressed garbage trucks, detachable box-type garbage trucks, food waste trucks, self-loading garbage trucks, and docking garbage trucks.
The special operation vehicle category includes: municipal sanitation operation vehicles, lifting and hoisting operation vehicles, and emergency support operation vehicles.
Furthermore, to provide a more detailed description and classification of special purpose vehicles and semi-trailers, the new standard also provides structural characteristic codes and usage characteristic codes for special purpose vehicles and semi-trailers, as well as a model compilation method for special purpose vehicles and semi-trailers.
“Classification, Naming and Model Compilation Method for Special Purpose Vehicles and Semi-Trailers” holds a crucial position in the automotive industry standard system as a key technical guideline for product access management, license registration, design and production, and market statistics. With the release and implementation of the new industry standard, it will provide a unified and authoritative technical basis for the design, research and development, production, operation management, and market promotion of special purpose vehicles. This will effectively promote the standardization and normalization development of the special purpose vehicle industry, further enhancing its competitiveness and market order.
