During the Republic of China era, “scavengers” (i.e., sanitation workers) were responsible for street cleaning, garbage collection, and drainage maintenance. At that time, their garbage trucks were simply wooden carts.
In the early 1980s, most garbage trucks in Shanghai were open flatbed trucks, which led to significant problems with trash scattering and flying during transportation. Subsequently, the sanitation department gradually started covering the open flatbed trucks with oilcloth or woven fabric, and later with iron sheet flaps or roller-type iron covers. These measures helped reduce the scattering of garbage, leading to the creation of China’s first garbage truck.
By the early 1990s, Shanghai had developed a variety of garbage transport vehicle types, including mechanical-cover flatbed dump trucks, side-loading garbage trucks, container arm trucks, and rear-loading compaction trucks.
